Web development trends for 2022 and beyond

The web development world is evolving rapidly and keeping pace with the latest trends is imperative for businesses. This is especially true for organisations looking to be competitive in the long term. By knowing the latest web development trends and applying the right technology suited to their business, organisations can craft a niche for themselves in the market.

This article explores some of the web development trends of 2022 that can increase work efficiency and engage customers.

Progressive web-app (PWA) development

Progressive apps are websites developed to look and feel like native apps across different mobile browsers, and offer a huge opportunity to engage users. Online users prefer app-like experiences with minimal elements on their screen, but are less likely to download a new app. This is why PWAs will be preferred for web development in 2022 to deliver improved user-experience without downloading apps.

A PWA is built on CSS, HTML, and JavaScript and are convenient to access over different platforms like Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Firefox for Android, and Microsoft Edge. Statistics note that PWAs have 50% higher customer engagement than native apps.

Pinterest, Instagram, and Uber are examples of a few PWAs with a huge user base.

Infinite Scroll

Website graphics are usually heavy and take time to load. Visiting different web pages within a website with bulky graphics can be time consuming. Infinite scrolling saves time by enabling websites to load faster.

10.3 seconds is the average load time for web pages on laptops and 27.3 seconds on mobile screens i.e., mobile screens take 87.4% more time for loading web pages. With the infinite scroll feature the time variance to update content on a webpage reduces significantly and the information becomes available as you scroll. Social media websites have been leveraging the technology for a long time and it is expected that 2022 will see the launch of more such websites.

While this feature will improve load time to retrieve information quickly, it can be best utilised for websites where users read without a specific objective in mind, for example online blogs, portfolio, etc. It is not a user-friendly feature for e-commerce websites where users have a fixed goal and they would prefer to complete the purchase process quickly.

Voice Assistance

Voice search eliminates the need for long keywords and enables communicating one’s requirement through speech. Research findings say that the use of voice assistance will increase heavily in the coming years. Voice assistance empowers more users to search online. Even a hearing or sight-impaired person can do a basic search with voice assistance. Therefore, voice recognition technology is here to grow in 2022.

AI-Powered Chatbots

AI technology can mimic human conversations easily. With this enhanced functionality, web apps help resolve user queries faster. Here’s a report that states around 67% users globally used chatbots in 2021. Out of this, only 12.8% of users had a negative experience. In 2022, AI-powered chatbots will continue to evolve with machine learning. Embedding AI chatbots can be impactful for your web applications.

Serverless

One of the most important web development trends for 2022 is serverless architecture. The architecture removes tasks like maintaining and scaling infrastructure, consequently saving time on maintenance and reducing development costs. A substantial growth is already seen with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Serverless architecture is a fairly new technology, but can make your organization more flexible by migrating the IT environment to the cloud with public and private environments. Without servers, you save the time spent on managing server blocks, further speeding up service deployment. A few serverless computing services are Azure, GCP, and AWS.

Containers

Less than 30% of applications use containers at present, but the number will surely increase. Serverless architecture requires containers; therefore, more than 75% of global organisations are expected to run containerised applications by the year 2022, states Gartner

The growing popularity of containers is because it offers several dependencies such as packing an application with application code, libraries, system tools, and settings. These support high-level abstractions reducing the operational costs. To leverage the benefits more companies will use containers for web systems in 2022.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Incorporating AR into business strategies can enable unique interactive user experiences. This is so far the most compelling use of technology – to engage users. AR has been used mostly in gaming application, training simulation, or in digital trial rooms for customers. Web apps can use AR to customise customer service.

Dark mode

Black text against a white screen can strain the eyes of online users. Instead, a dark mode (white text on black or some other dark-coloured background) is preferable as it reduces eye strain in low-light environments, and saves battery power. The popularity of dark mode will continue in 2022.

To conclude

Customer demands are changing like never before, and so are the technologies to meet such demands. The above-mentioned are the expected web-development trends in 2022; however, nothing is set in stone and the technologies may change according to user preferences.
